Top 5 Nebula Jig Head & Softbait Combos

For Spring Snapper Workups in New Zealand

Spring in New Zealand marks the start of one of the most exciting times of the year for snapper fishing — the arrival of snapper workups. As the water begins to warm and baitfish like pilchards and anchovies move closer to shore, snapper follow in huge numbers, feeding aggressively beneath diving birds and surface action.

If you’re gearing up for spring snapper workups in NZ, having the right jig head and softbait combo can make all the difference. In these high-action conditions, your lure needs to sink fast, move naturally, and stand out amongst clouds of bait.

Whether you’re fishing the Hauraki Gulf, Bream Bay, Bay of Islands, or the Coromandel, these 5 proven snapper softbait combos have been tested in real NZ conditions and consistently deliver results.

  • Best For: Clear, calm water; sunny days; sandy bottoms

  • Why It Works: High contrast and colour pop in clean conditions draw bites quickly.

It’s a top performer in places like the Firth of Thames, Hauraki Gulf, Bream Bay where spring water clarity often improves as the season progresses.

Some days, snapper hang deeper under the workup and get selective. That’s where this subtle but effective combo comes into its own. The shimmer of the Purple Frost jig head and the lifelike movement of the Redbone softbait work beautifully together to entice cautious fish.

  • Best For: Deeper drifts, picky feeders

  • Why It Works: Balanced presentation for when snapper are hesitant to commit.

Ideal for prospecting the edges of a workup or when things slow down midday.

3. Ninth Nebula Orange Roughy Jig Head

paired with Daiwa Bait Junkie Grub 4″ (Takasagi)

Ninth Nebula Orange Roughy & Daiwa Bait Junkie Takasagi Combo

When workups are happening close to river mouths or in stirred-up spring water, visibility becomes a challenge. That’s when the high-contrast Orange Roughy jig head paired with the Takasagi softbait comes into play.

  • Best For: Cloudy days, dirty water, estuary-fed coastlines

  • Why It Works: Bright colours catch the eye of hungry snapper in poor visibility conditions.

If you’re fishing the drift or chasing inshore spring workups, this combo is a must-have in your tackle box.

Ninth Nebula Cabbage Patch & Z-Man Houdini Combo

4. Ninth Nebula Cabbage Patch Jig Head

paired with Z-Man Houdini 5” Jerk Shad

Ninth Nebula Cabbage Patch & Z-Man Houdini Combo

This is a versatile combo for twitch-style fishing, especially when snapper are actively hunting and need a fast-moving target to trigger a bite. The Z-Man Houdini Jerk Shad provides erratic, darting action that mimics fleeing baitfish, while the Cabbage Patch jig head holds up well in rough terrain.

  • Best For: Active fish near reef edges, fast-drifts through bait balls

  • Why It Works: The realistic jerk motion imitates injured baitfish, drawing reaction strikes.

Perfect for fishing around structure or when the bite is on fire beneath a feeding frenzy.

5. Ninth Nebula Blue Magic Jig Head

paired with Daiwa Bait Junkie Grub 4″ (BP Iwashi Glow)

Ninth Nebula Blue Magic & Daiwa Bait Junkie BP Iwashi Glow Combo

This is our go-to combo for deep or midwater workups. The Nebula Blue Magic jig head mimics natural baitfish colours, while the BP Iwashi Glow tail gives off a subtle glow that makes it deadly when the water is slightly murky or shaded by bait clouds.

  • Best For: Deep workups, morning and evening sessions

  • Why It Works: The natural hues combined with the pink underbelly of the softbait mimic a wounded baitfish, making it an easy target for feeding snapper.

This combo shines when you’re drifting under active birds and need to get your bait into the strike zone quickly.
